Times have changed. In the old days, people used to use pagers, pay high rates for overseas calls, send and receive letters via the postal service, and pay a premium to conduct in-person focus groups that were time-consuming, expensive, and inconvenient for client teams to attend. Thankfully, a few things have changed:
* cellphones
* skype
* email
* focusgroupfacilitator.com
That last one is key. Naturally, some moderators will tell you that you absolutely need the in-person interaction and ability to observe faces, expressions, and body language that allow further understanding of participants - beyond what they say or the tone of their voice.
Of course there are certainly circumstances in which in-person focus groups are indeed preferred over telephone/ online focus groups (we do both). What isn't common knowledge is that in many cases, the client is better served by using the well tested, but newer and more efficient methodology: telephone/online focus groups.
